Why Are RAM and SSD Prices Rising?
Think of the world’s supply of memory chips as a limited batch of ingredients that every bakery wants a share of. Right now, the biggest “bakeries” in the world, massive AI data centers run by major tech companies are buying up huge amounts of memory to power artificial intelligence systems. That leaves a much smaller share for everyday products like laptops, desktops, and smartphones.
According to the National Tech Association of Malaysia (Pikom), a large portion of the world’s available memory supply is now being directed toward AI infrastructure and data centers, leaving less for everyday consumer electronics. Pikom chairman Alex Liew summed up the outlook this way:

Industry data backs this up. Memory research firm TrendForce, cited by hardware retailer ACEMAGIC, reports:

And it isn’t just RAM. Storage analysis site OSCOO notes that:
“Enterprise SSDs will face the steepest price hikes due to unrelenting AI-driven demand.” ~ OSCOO
How Much Have Prices Actually Gone Up?

Storage has been affected as well. SSDs and hard drives have become harder to find, with some shops running low on regular consumer models and left mainly with pricier “surveillance-grade” drives instead.
Which Is Affected the Most – DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5?
If you’re due for a RAM upgrade, it’s worth checking with your technician which type your device actually supports before assuming the newest option is necessary.
DDR3 RAM
Supply is very limited since manufacturers moved away from it years ago, so replacement prices can be surprisingly high given how old the technology is.
DDR4 RAM
It’s seeing some of the sharpest price increases simply because it’s what most people are trying to upgrade.
DDR5 RAM
Because it’s in high demand from both everyday users and AI/server applications, DDR5 RAM seen some of the steepest price jumps, with supply that can shift unpredictably week to week.
What This Means for New Computer Prices
This isn’t limited to upgrades, it’s showing up in new computer pricing too. Since RAM and SSD are built into every new laptop and desktop, manufacturers are responding in one of two ways:
- Raising the price of models that come with generous memory and storage.
- Reducing the specs – for example, shipping a laptop with 8GB RAM instead of 16GB to keep the price point unchanged.
This means that when comparing two laptops at a similar price today versus a year ago, you may actually be getting less memory or storage for the same money. It’s worth checking the exact specifications before buying, rather than assuming a similar price means a similar computer.
What Should You Do Now?
- Check if you really need the upgrade right now. If your current setup is still functional, it may be worth waiting to see if supply stabilises.
- Buy based on your actual needs, not just the largest number available. A well-configured 16GB setup can outperform a poorly optimised 32GB one for everyday tasks.
- Compare prices across a few retailers before committing — differences between sellers can be significant during periods like this.
